The bottom layer is the nitty-gritty industrial area where your guests will enter. You manage a donut-shaped space station composed of three decks. On top of all this, your sassy AI companion is constantly demanding you choose the randomly generated choices of “bad or worse” as you frantically try to micromanage your intergalactic resort. Not to mention, amidst the crowd of cute and cuddly aliens, there are prowling criminals and pickpockets seeking to take advantage of the system. Space pirates, mutant slugs, and cockroach bugs will terrorize your establishments regularly. Yet, you can’t expect everything to be hunky-dory in the whimsical universe of Spacebase Startopia. ![]() As you expand, you unlock new workshops and gizmos, which increases your gains in positive reputation points among the interstellar community. The name of the game is to keep your alien guests satisfied with your services and recreational facilities. However, the gameplay feels more similar to that of an outer space theme park simulator. ![]() Spacebase Startopia markets itself as an empire-building strategy simulator with a hint of RTS. The story aspect will be on the backburner as the meaty gameplay lies in the sandbox mode. Each of the ten campaign missions primarily functions as a glorified extensive tutorial. That being said, those hoping for a comprehensive narrative in Spacebase Startopia are out of luck. Įmployed as Commander of the Spacebase Startopia, it is your duty to improve the diplomatic relations of extraterrestrial species by providing them with the finest get-away paradise a space station can offer. Starbucks is virtually located in the stars, DJ moths love space jamming to Nep-tunes, and your space station AI has a terrible taste in “comet-y.” Spacebase Startopia is an intergalactic theme park simulator developed by Realmforge Studios, available for PC, Xbox, Playstation, and the Nintendo Switch. Spacebase Startopia is the go-to space station for E.T.’s day off. In between the busy schedule of invading solar systems and probing cows, aliens find leisure in munching Mars bars, sipping Slurpees, and dancing to disco. The campaign is quite a bit larger, too, and will be accompanied by cooperative and competitive multiplayer and, of course, a sandbox mode.Conquering the galaxy is no easy task. Spacebase Startopia will have a more robust tutorial and tips system, and progression will be more defined, unlocking new rooms as you complete missions. There are a couple of places, however, where Realmforge thought Startopia was a bit lacking. There are subtle changes in the details, but returning station administrators should be able to jump in without missing a beat. On the Sub Deck, you can build a trading dock and watch as the ships float in. Even the relaxing Bio Deck can be used to make you rich, as you can sell everything you grow there, or the resources can be spent on stuff you can build for your station. There’s a trader for each alien species, and you can build up industries to supply them with goods. While visitors to your station will spend money, to make the big bucks you’ll want to trade. In the disco, you can spy on them showing off their killer moves, and you can get the DJ to change the tunes to suit the dancing aliens’ musical preferences. It’s all very playful and silly and definitely wouldn’t pass a health and safety inspection on Earth. ![]() When someone wants a wash, for instance, they have to go through what is essentially a car wash. There’s a lot of joy to be had in just watching your visitors use your rooms.
